SUPPORTS LIVER FUNCTION AND DETOXIFICATION
Methionine is a member of the lipotropic team which includes inositol, choline and betaine. Its primary function is to prevent excessive accumulation of fat in the liver. It also supports the removal of toxins from the liver and assists in the breakdown of fats in the body increasing energy production. Methionine and other sulphur-bearing amino acids, such as cysteine, also play important role as antioxidants and detoxifying agents able to neutralise various toxins.
BENEFICIAL FOR PARKINSON’S PATIENTS
According to a study which included 11 patients with Parkinson’s disease, those of them who took L-methionine supplements for a period of two to 24 weeks showed fewer tremors than usual. The study concluded that L-methionine may be beneficial in reducing symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. Also other studies confirm methionine may play a critical role in prevention of aging related to oxidative damage and loss of dopamine in Parkinson’s disease.
HELPS MAINTAIN HEALTHY CHOLESTEROL LEVELS
Methionine helps prevent elevated cholesterol levels by increasing the liver’s production of lecithin.
ANTIOXIDANT PROTECTING AGAINST OXIDATIVE DAMAGE
Methionine has antioxidant properties helping protect cells from oxidative damage. It has been known to be essential for the production of glutathione – the most potent free radical scavenger which also plays a critical role in maintaining the normal liver function and elimination of toxins.
INCREASES CREATINE TO BURN FAT AND BUILD MUSCLES
Our body uses methionine to make another amino acid creatine known for its ability to burn fat and build muscles.
HELPS BUILD STRONG BONES
According to one study after a period of two months, exercising rats, that were given methionine, had not only almost 10% lower body weight, but also significantly increased bone mineralization and strength compared to rats that were fed the diets without methionine supplementation.
HELPS INCREASE SAME & GOOD MOOD HORMONES
In human body Methionine is used to make a very important compound called SAM-e (s-adenosyl methionine) which imposes a very beneficial effect on our mood by increasing levels of dopamine, serotonin, and other feel-good hormones and neurotransmitters. In addition, SAM-e also supports proper function of the immune system.
PROMOTES HEALTHY HAIR, SKIN, NAILS & JOINTS THROUGH SULPHUR
Methionine also serves as an important source of the trace element sulphur, essential for the health of hair, skin, nails and joints.
MAY HELP REDUCE RISK OF COLORECTAL CANCER
According to the Melbourne Colorectal Cancer Study which concluded that a diet containing all of these micronutrients, including methionine, may help lower colorectal cancer risks.
OTHER BENEFITS
Methionine supports growth of blood vessels, helps heal wounds, can be beneficial for individuals with Parkinson’s and schizophrenia, helps reduce symptoms of drug withdrawal, radiation, copper poisoning, asthma, allergies, alcoholism, liver damage and depression.
FOOD SOURCES
Methionine is an essential amino acid naturally found in various high-protein foods. The best healthy dietary source of methionine are nuts, especially Brazil nuts: 315mg per ounce (28g) (43% RDI), Sesame seeds (34%), Pumpkin seeds & Chia seeds (23%), Sunflower seeds (19%), and Flaxseed (14%).
Meat and cheese contain significant amount of this amino acid but they are not recommended as they significantly increase risk of cancer, heart attacks, strokes, and other health problems.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Addition of Vitamin B6 helps maximise absorption and effectiveness of L-methionine.
Too much methionine in the standard American diet may also cause problems.
MAY HELP WITH DRUG WITHDRAWAL
When addicted to cocaine rats were given L-methionine, it was able to block the effects of the drug, making it much less addictive than without the L-methionine. The results may indicate that L-methionine can also help those dealing with withdrawal by slowly lowering the effects and helping people kick the addiction — or even help prevent addiction in the first place.
