HEAVY MENSTRUAL BLEEDING (MENORRHAGIA)

Written by Slawomir (“Swavak”) Gromadzki, MPH

Heavy Menstrual Bleeding (Menorrhagia)

Menorrhagia is a term for excessive and often prolonged menstrual bleeding. It is also known as hypermenorrhea when bleeding stays for longer than seven days. It is often accompanied by other menstrual symptoms such as pain, cramps, muscle aches, headaches, nausea and vomiting.

Heavy bleeding is often a symptom of perimenopause when estrogen dominance resulting in irregular heavy bleeding. Emotional stress can make this worse.

Normal menstrual flow occurs every 21 to 35 days, lasts four to five days and results in a total blood loss of 30 to 40 millilitres (about 2 to 3 tablespoons). Your period may be regular or irregular, light or heavy, painful or pain-free, long or short and still be considered normal. Women with menorrhagia lose about 100 millilitres of blood or more.

Although heavy menstrual bleeding is a common concern among premenopausal women, few women experience blood loss severe enough to be defined as menorrhagia.

CAUSES

Fibroids are the most common reason for excessive bleeding. Read about Fibroids and how to treat this condition >

– Hormonal imbalance. Usually oestrogen dominance and lower progesterone levels. Excessive consumption of saturated fats as they increase levels of oestradiol (strongest of the three types of body oestrogens) levels. Also tap water is often contaminated with oestradiol. Obesity as it is associated with excessive levels of oestradiol.

Endometriosis >.

Aspirin, oral contraceptive pills, and medications that thin the blood increasing the risk of bleeding.

– Even some herbs such as Dong Quai used in excessive amounts may contribute to excessive bleeding and should be avoided by women with heavy menstrual bleeding.

Low thyroid hormone levels have been related to menorrhagia (heavy menstrual bleeding). However, the low thyroid condition often does not show up on lab tests. Factors like environmental pollutants, heavy metals, chemicals found in plastic containers which are endocrine (hormone) disruptors, can block the thyroid.

– Chronic vitamin B12 (watch the video below) and folic acid deficiency.

Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID).

– Emotional stress, nervousness, and anxiety contribute to hormonal imbalance and all menstrual problems. For this reason, irritability, stressful situations, anxiety and any negative emotions may have a very bad influence on the female reproductive system. The problem gets much worse when nervousness and frequent psychological stress are associated with magnesium deficiency and lack of other vitamins, minerals, and essential nutrients.

– Other factors that contribute to oestrogen dominance and menstrual problems include lack of exercise, lack of zinc and B vitamins, certain medications, a refined diet high in sugar and white flour products, use of stimulants (caffeine, alcohol, illegal drugs, cigarette smoking), artificial sweeteners such as aspartame, lack of probiotic bacteria in the gut due to bad refined diet, antibiotics, consumption of meat and dairy products, sugar, stimulants, overgrowth of harmful bacteria and candida (yeasts), toxins, stress, lack of dietary fibre, etc.

TREATMENT

– The most important aspect of successful treatment is lifestyle and diet according to the recommendations listed in the HEALTH RECOVERY PLAN >

Please study it carefully and do your best to use the remedies and implement all the principles. If you manage to do it you will recover from this problem.

HYDROTHERAPY

HOT FOOT BATH for Heavy Menstrual Bleeding (Menorrhagia)

– An excellent way to deal with heavy menstrual bleeding is a hot foot bath. Keeping your feet for about 30 minutes in hot water can be very helpful in boosting immunity and reducing congestion and pain from any area of the body including the uterus. The very important benefit of water treatments such as hot foot bath is its ability to move blood from different parts of the body such as brain, chest, abdomen, etc. which is very helpful when the blood in the brain and internal organs is congested, inflamed and often overloaded with toxins and impurities. It might be very beneficial in case of pain, sinusitis, headaches, cancer, arthritis, any inflammation or even fibromyalgia which is believed to be caused by too much blood in the brain which overstimulates the nervous system leading to increased sensitivity to pain. Hoot bath can be very beneficial in those conditions because the high temperature of water dilates blood vessels in feet. As a result, the congested blood moves from the upper parts of the body including chest, brain, internal organs and any part of the body to the lower parts bringing great relief. At the same time, you need to wring out two clothes in ice water and put them on your forehead and neck, as it will constrict the blood vessels in the head, which also helps to ease the congestion. If you are a diabetic use thermometer or ask someone to check the temperature as diabetics have lower sensitivity to heat and may burn themselves. Details about HOT FOOT BATH are found in  HYDROTHERAPY >.

REMEDIES & SUPPLEMENTS FOR MENORRHAGIA

AGNUS CASTUS (VITEX)

Agnus Castus (known also as Vitex, Chaste Berry or Monk’s Pepper) usually gives best results. In the article on PMS, you will find details on Agnus castus (Vitex) which usually is very effective in coping with Menorrhagia. Vitex supports hormonal balance in the body by helping normalize ovulation and progesterone levels. In one 2 year study, Vitex was used to treat 51 women with Menorrhagia and 64% of the women reported improvement starting within 2 months of treatment. No side effects were reported. Agnus Castus is regarded as the most effective herbal remedy in coping with uterine cramps and PMS symptoms. It is especially useful and even amazing when PMS is associated with heavy and painful periods, menstrual cramps, short cycle, mood swings, irritability, fluid retention, or tender breasts. Agnus castus is a large shrub (native to the Mediterranean region of southern Europe) with lilac or white flowers and small fruits. Taking Agnus works by stimulating the body to produce more natural progesterone in a safe and controlled way.

According to a German study, over 90% of the female participants reported that their PMS symptoms either significantly decreased or even completely disappeared after 3 months of treatment with Agnus castus! In another large study (with 1,634 participants taking Agnus castus) 42% reported complete recovery from PMS while 51% managed to decrease symptoms. In addition, 86% of the physicians involved in the study declared that the treatment of PMS with Agnus castus had “a pronounced efficacy”. At the same time, no serious side effects of using Agnus castus were reported.

For PMS I usually recommend Agnus castus in the form of the tincture (Natures Answer) or tablets and our female customers repeatedly confirmed the effectiveness of both of them. If you want Agnus castus to work faster take it in the form of the tincture (Natures answer makes the most effective one). It must be taken every day throughout the cycle (not just the week before the period). Stop taking AC after the symptoms disappear and start again if they appear again.

It is not recommended to take Agnus castus or any other hormone-balancing herb (Dong Quai, Black Cohosh, etc.) if you use hormonal contraceptives, hormonal medication, an implant or a coil as AC may nullify their effect by regulating the hormonal imbalance they cause.

Vitex (Agnus castus) can be considered as an effective and well-tolerated treatment for the relief of symptoms of mild and moderate PMS >

Vitex (Agnus castus) is an effective and well-tolerated treatment for the relief of symptoms of premenstrual syndrome >

In addition, vitex also helps treat the secondary dysmenorrhoea as by balancing the ratio of estrogen to progesterone, it reduces and prevents fibroids >.

VITAMINS AND MINERALS

– Heavy or excessive menstrual bleeding can be reduced by increasing Progesterone levels. Apart from Agnus castus (mentioned above), the most important nutrient for maintaining normal progesterone levels seems to be Vitamin B6. Vitamin B6 is absolutely essential for the development of the corpus luteum (a gland produced in the ovary after the egg is released) out of which progesterone is produced. Therefore, vitamin B6 is necessary for preventing progesterone deficiency and through progesterone for balancing other hormones including oestrogen. A group of British researchers suggest that taking a daily dose of  100 to 200 milligrams of vitamin B6 may be very helpful in relieving PMS symptoms. According to the study women with PMS taking vitamin B6 supplements experienced significantly reduced PMS symptoms (such as depression) compared to the placebo group. In order to be more effective, B6 supplements should be taken about seven days before menstruation. For the first two weeks of the cycle, it is recommended to take about 100 mg of B6 daily with other B vitamins. Also keep in mind that the more vitamin B6 you is used, the more magnesium is needed. magnesium is also necessary to be used with vitamin D supplements.

Vitamin B6 alleviates depression associated with premenstrual syndrome >

– Apart from B6 also Vitamin B5 and Vitamin C are required to assist the body in producing progesterone. Since higher doses of B5 and B6 combined with Zinc and Magnesium can even stop menstruation (by increasing progesterone), in case of heavy menstruation supplementing this nutrients can be very helpful. It is difficult to establish an effective dosage but you can try taking B complex containing 50mg of B5 and 50mg of B6 two times a day with meals and find out whether it helps.

Zinc: According to some sources vitamin B6 must be taken with zinc as without it B6 won’t help to cope with PMS symptoms! You need to take about 20 to 30mg of zinc after breakfast.

– In case of heavy menstruation, take two times a day 150-200mg of Magnesium citrate, glycinate or other good types of magnesium as this minerals relaxes uterus (muscle) during menstruation reducing contractions, excessive bleeding and uterine cramps.

Vitamin B12: 1,000 to 2,000 mcg a day under the tongue (must be sublingual Methylcobalamin!) appears to be very helpful in coping with heavy menstruation. Many people have low levels of this most important vitamin. Read a fascinating article on B12 >

– Women with heavy menstrual bleeding are at high risk for developing iron deficiency and anaemia. In order to prevent it try consuming foods rich in natural iron: Chlorella or Spirulina (1-2 tablespoons or 10 tablets 30 min before breakfast with vegetable juice or smoothie), blackstrap molasses (1 tablespoon with breakfast), pumpkin and sunflower seeds, beans, tofu, nettles, moringa, spinach, amaranth, Swiss chard, dark leafy greens, quinoa, prunes. You can also take a good quality supplement with iron such as iron bisglycinate.

HERBS, FODS & SPICES THAT MAY HELP TO STOP PERIOD

WARNING: If you intend to stop menstruation using the below-mentioned herbs, it is important to consult your physician; especially if you are on medications. Also in case you are pregnant or think you could be, you must avoid taking these herbs and spices, as they could lead to a miscarriage.

The following herbs and spices may stop menstrual bleeding: Raspberry leaf, Angelica root (known also as Dong Quai or female ginseng), Radix Noto Ginseng (known as Tien Chi Ginseng or Tien Qi), Lady Mantle, Garden Sage, Shepherd’s Purse, Ginger, Cinnamon, Thyme, Mustard seeds, Licorice, and some other herbs and spices.

Raspberry leaf traditionally is used for relieving painful menstruation, but you can also use it in an attempt to stop your period. It may bring relief in menstrual pain and heavy periods. Raspberry leaf is used to alleviate menstrual cycle discomfort. It appears to tone and relax the uterine and pelvic muscles. Raspberry leaf also acts as an astringent by reducing excessive bleeding. Typical dosage for the raspberry leaf ranges from 1.5 – 3 grams per day.

Molasses: Some ladies reported that blackstrap molasses helped them to stop heavy menstruation. It is also high in vitamin B6 which aids the liver in ridding the body of excess hormones, which in turn helps to create a balance that alleviates irregularities. The magnesium found in molasses may help stop heavy menstrual bleeding.

– There are various herbs such as Agrimony, Nettle leaf, Shepherd’s purse, or Yarrow that are astringent (reduces bleeding and prevents haemorrhaging). Place a small handful or about 3 tablespoons of one of the herbs or a mixture into a glass jar or large thermos flask. Fill with boiled water, cap tightly. Steep for 30-40 minutes. Drink 2-3 cups a day between meals. If you expect heavy menstruation start using these herbs (1-2 glasses per day) a week before the period starts for better results.

Maca is a wonderful superfood to support overall hormonal balance by providing support and nourishment for the systems that control hormone release and production.

– A study has found Ginger to be effective for heavy menstrual bleeding in young women as it has the ability to positively improve the ratio between prostaglandin synthetase and cyclooxygenase. Lack of balance between these two is regarded as one of the causes of menorrhagia.  Ginger has also been shown to reduce pain and inflammation. To stop or reduce period, boil Ginger in water for a few minutes and take it three times a day.

– Also, Angelica root, known also as Dong Quai, or Female Ginseng, has been used as a treatment for menstrual cramps, and to relieve menopause symptoms. The herb balances female hormones and suppresses menstruation. Avoid it if you are pregnant as it can cause miscarriage.

– Grind the Licorice root to a fine powder. Take it three times a day three grams with water,  for about five days. It is very beneficial in reducing excessive bleeding during menstruation.

Cinnamon has been known as a herbal remedy for heavy flow. Make a cinnamon tea by steeping one cinnamon stick in a cup of boiling water to stop heavy periods. You can also take 3 drops of tincture of cinnamon back twice a day. Avoid using too much or frequently as cinnamon has some negative effects.

– To reduce excessive menstrual flow, seep one tablespoon of Thyme leaves in a cup of boiling water for ten minutes.

Radix Noto Ginseng, also known as Tien Chi Ginseng, or Tien Qi may be effective in stopping menstrual bleeding. You need to stir 2-3 grams of the powdered root into your juice.

Lady Mantle and Garden Sage are known to reduce excessive menstrual bleeding. Mix a teaspoon of either of them in a cup of water and boil for a few minutes.

– Grind 40 grams of dried Mustard seeds to a fine powder, and take two grams of the powder in plant milk or a juice every day to decrease excessive bleeding.

– Papaya. Pregnant women are sometimes asked to avoid eating papaya fruit because it can trigger estrogen levels leading to changes in the uterine blood flow and miscarriage in pregnant women. However, it is also believed that the same papaya may also help delay period.

– Gelatin. A mixture of one pack gelatine and a cup of water is suggested by some sources as something that may help to delay periods instantly. This is a Chinese technique of delaying periods from a few hours to a week. Make sure you don’t use porcine gelatine. The best and safest one is fish gelatine.

– Lime juice a couple of days before expected period date may help delay menstruation or make blood flow lighter.

– Apple Cider Vinegar. Drink one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar with 1-2 glasses of filtered clean water daily for 10 days before your periods is also supposed to delay them.

– Also, cucumber and watermelon are sometimes mentioned as food that may help delay periods.

– Uterus Massage. Massaging cold-pressed olive oil or castor oil, raw coconut oil, etc. into the lower abdomen is supposed to help delay and ease menstrual pain during the cycle.

– Among herbs lady mantle, garden sage and shepherd’s purse are supposed to help.

WARNING: If you intend to stop menstruation using the above-mentioned herbs, it is important to consult your physician; especially if you are on medications. Also in case you are pregnant or think you could be, you must avoid taking these herbs and spices, as they could lead to a miscarriage.

– According to Phyllis Balch, essential and healthy omega 3 fatty acids found in ground fresh flaxseed and flaxseed oil are proven effective in the reduction of heavy menstrual bleeding.

Vitamin B6: A group of British researchers suggest that taking a daily dose of  100 to 200 milligrams of vitamin B6 may be very helpful in relieving PMS symptoms. According to the study women with PMS taking vitamin B6 supplements experienced significantly reduced PMS symptoms (such as depression) compared to the placebo group. Zinc citrate (citrate doesn’t cause nausea): 30  to 50mg a day after breakfast. According to some sources, vitamin B6 must be taken with zinc as without it B6 won’t help to cope with hormonal imbalance and PMS symptoms! You need to take about 20 to 50mg of zinc after breakfast.

– It is very important to drink plenty of water (possibly distilled or at least properly filtered) before and during this and any heating treatment because heating raises body temperature and causes sweating, thus dehydrating the body.

– Some fruits like pomegranate, grapes, Indian gooseberry, may help reduce excessive bleeding.

Spicy foods are to be prohibited before and during menstruation for better result.

– Avoid aspirin as it interferes with blood clotting increasing risk of bleeding.

 – Eat foods with vitamin K such as leafy vegetables and asparagus.

– The types of fats consumed can be a key factor in determining proper balance between estrogen and progesterone.  Avoid bad saturated fats (animal foods) and hydrogenated vegetable oils (margarine, cakes, doughnuts, etc.) as they compete for uptake with healthy essential fatty acids (EFAs). will help reduce estrogen dominance.  Hormones such as estrogen and progesterone use cholesterol as their foundational building block.

– Eat more vegetables from the cabbage family such as broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts. Natural chemicals found in them can help the liver to change estrogen into a water-soluble form much easier to be removed from the body.

Dietary fibre (found in psyllium husks, skins of fruit and vegetables, or lignans in flaxseed) reduces estrogen levels by feeding and an increasing number of probiotic intestinal bacteria that positively influence the beta-glucouronidase enzyme production. These fibres exert oestrogen-like activities and help protect against estrogen dominance.

– Eat 1-3 tablespoons of raw home-made sauerkraut as it is very high in live probiotic bacteria that will impose a positive effect on regulating estrogen levels. Fermented soy products such as tempeh, miso and tamari will have a similar effect.

– Take good quality probiotic formulas as gut health greatly depends on a healthy ratio between good and bad bacteria. Good quality Probiotic formula is one of the best ways to keep Candida (one of the key causes of PMS and menstrual problems). The most effective probiotic formulas are the following: UltraProbio, ImmuProbio, ColiProbio by HealthAid. Another excellent probiotic supplement is Symprove as it delivers live, active multi-strains of bacteria to the gut – just where they are needed. It’s totally different to any other multi-strain supplement because of its Unique Delivery System (UDS). This special delivery system protects the ‘beneficial’ bacteria from the gastric juices in the digestive tract, where they quickly reach targeted areas of the gut and colonise. The bacteria arrive, thrive and survive. Independent research shows the best results come when used continually for 12 weeks. Many people then go on to take a maintenance dose (half dose) as part of their daily diet. Delivered as a refreshing, water-based, Mango & Passion Fruit drink, Symprove is non-dairy and gluten-free.

Please be careful in choosing supplements with probiotic bacteria s not long ago scientists tested many popular products and supplements which were supposed to contain live probiotic bacteria and tests revealed it was true in only 30% of them! Also majority of yoghurts are deprived of live cultures and even if they contain some it is a much lower number than good quality probiotic supplements.

Exercise at least 30–60 minutes per day.

– Get enough sleep.

– Practice deep breathing.

– Proper stress control and positive thinking – extremely important!

– Don’t drink tap water as it is often high in estradiol (100 times more powerful than estrogen) which causes hormonal imbalance in both men and women. Drink only 3 times 3 glasses of distilled water between meals. Read more about drinking water >.

– Avoiding chlorine, fluoride (toothpastes with fluoride, tap water, etc.), and bromine.

– No Splenda or other artificial sweeteners!!! Use Xylitol or Stevia instead.

–  No sugar and high glucose / high fructose syrup!!! Use Xylitol or Stevia instead.

– Drink and use for cooking only distilled or at least filtered water. Not all water filters remove fluoride, so make sure the one you have does or use only distilled water (buy a water distiller). Taking chlorella and turmeric help to get rid of fluoride and heavy metals such as mercury.

– Avoid gluten (wheat products, etc.)

– Avoid or reduce consumption of acidic foods: all meat and dairy products (cheese is the worst!).

– Eliminate stimulants (alcohol, smoking, anything with caffeine or other similar harmful alkaloids: coffee, tea, green tea, mate, yerba mate, cola, chocolate, etc.).

– Go on vegan unrefined diet as it gives best results. Eat especially plenty of raw vegetable salads and raw vegetable juices. Hallelujah diet is the best and most effective.

– Eliminate all junk food, processed food, artificial sweeteners, trans fats, and anything with bad preservatives and chemical.

– Eat whole, unprocessed foods, and choose as many organics as possible.

– Get adequate sun exposure if possible (20 minutes a day during summertime between 10 am and 2 pm) to maintain vitamin D levels.

– Use glass bottles as Bisphenol A (BPA) which is found in plastic bottles and cans (they are lined up with plastic) disrupt the endocrine system.

– Avoid hydrogenated fats and trans fats (margarine, doughnuts, cakes, etc.) and pro-inflammatory omega 6 fatty acids (soy oil, corn oil, sunflower oil, etc.).

– Increase consumption of omega 3 fatty acids in the form of ground flax seeds, chia seeds. Omega 3s are the building blocks for hormones that control immune function and cell growth.

– Detoxifying body from heavy metals by using a combination of Chlorella, Milk Thistle, Turmeric, Cilantro.

– Remove any dental fillings containing mercury.

– Increase intake of healthy fats such as raw coconut oil, coconut milk, avocado, chia seeds (soaked for at least 30 minutes or overnight), ground flaxseeds, and hemp seeds as they will balance hormones. Coconut oil is a saturated fat comprising medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), which are known to increase metabolism and promote weight loss. Coconut oil is very stable (shelf life of three to five years at room temperature), so the body is much less burdened with oxidative stress than it is from many other vegetable oils.

– Increase consumption of vitamin A in the form of beta-carotene found in carrots, apricots, green leafy vegetables, etc.

– Avoid meat and dairy products as they contribute to hormonal imbalance.

– Completely eliminate intake of refined sugar as it is one of the key causes of candida overgrowth of Candida which is one of the key causes of PMS. Instead of sugar use safe sweeteners such as xylitol or stevia. Don’t use artificial sweeteners as they cause numerous very dangerous side effects. Even honey and sugary foods should be avoided at this stage of your menstrual cycle. Also avoid products made from white flour as well as snacks with significant fat content. Besides soda drinks, alcohol and caffeinated drinks should also be avoided. In place of these foods, eat more vegetables, seafood, nuts, beans and seeds.

– Avoid caffeine. The image below shows how certain drugs and toxins may degrade spider’s ability to build a spiderweb. On caffeine it seems unable to do more than string a few threads together at random. The more toxic the chemical, the more deformed the web.

AACAFFEINE. PMS, PREMENSTRUAL SYNDROME, AGNUS CASTUS, VITEX, RECOVERY

– Treat unresolved emotional issues as a source of stress. Menstrual cramps reflect emotions and mental attitude. Stress, anxiety or depression are often key culprits. It is important to identify the stressors and learn use ways such as prayer that can help to control stress and negative emotions.

– Read about the DEADLY CONSEQUENCES OF UNFORGIVINGNESS >

– If you believe in the existence of God don’t forget about daily fervent prayers and reading or listening to good spiritual literature (such as the Bible, Desire of Ages > and Ministry of Healing> by Ellen G White available online free of charge) which presents God as loving, healing, forgiving, carrying and saving from eternal death Person. All this will greatly increase the effectiveness of your improved diet and lifestyle: “Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” (1Thessalonians 5:16-18, NIV); “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7, NIV). Because from my own experience I know and remember how difficult it was, in my case, to change my eating habits and give up on junk food and stimulants using my own pathetic at that time will power, I recommend to you reading or listening to a book Steps to Christ> and Great Controversy > by Ellen White. If you carefully study all the information presented there and follow the steps, you will not only become victorious but will actually experience an inward transformation which will enable you to enjoy your new lifestyle (including diet and physical activity).
